Not sure which version I like better

on your new highlights

First Snow

Carpe Diem Time Glass #13,  First Snow

The first snow a surprise, much earlier than expected.  There were no phone calls telling of closed schools - you retired this year.  There were no delighted squeals or racing feet above our heads.  The boy’s long grown, our daughter recently in college.  The first snow came quietly, and the solitude stayed.  The only footprints, mine and that of the devil raccoon, back to steal another suet feeder.  My garden blossoms dusted in white and ice.  I cut a rose and bring it in for the breakfast table.  Our love not yet grown cold.

Solitude (Kodoku)

Carpe Diem #622 Solitude (Kodoku)

I miss you most
midday when no laughter rings
throughout the house

~

wind lashes my ears
bleak walk home
no one to greet me

~

cold cup of coffee
stale toast on the table
signs of our parting

First Light

in dawns first light
I roam the darkened house
covering children

~

morning breaks
across the ocean waves
reflections

~

first light of dawn
new possibilities birthed
in darkened world

~

in frosty morning
first light shimmers
winter fairyland

Loneliness - Troiku

         curling up alone
in the imprint where you slept
       tears no longer flow

curling up alone
with a good book
no substitute

in the imprint where you slept
I still feel your warmth
on cold nights

tears no longer flow
memories keep me company
life moves forward

Christmas Carols

Carpe Diem #620 Christmas Carols

For me Christmas carols are always best sung by children.  Each year I have the annoyance and pleasure of helping with the Christmas play costumes and discipline back stage.  Nothing ever goes as planned, but is probably much better.  And yes, the Joseph in the second Haiku was my son 20 years ago. That sweet little thing next to him could really pack a wallop.

while shepherds gather
angels sing sweetly off key
one lamb cries for mom

as children sing
Mary and Joseph fight
over baby

disheveled kings march
choir sings “We Three Kings”
shepherds and sheep roam

forgetting missed cues
parents join in "Silent Night"
all are smiles now

Winter Moons

Carpe Diem # 619 Oak Moon

If you have ever consulted the Farmer’s Almanac, you would find many names for the full moon.  Many of the names come from the different indian tribes in North America. Each season has different full moon names as well as each month.  The moons during the winter are from the December solstice to the March equinox.  There is also a blue moon, when two full moon’s occur during one month.  The next winter blue moon is in January 2018.  For my haiku, I also included the November moon since we often have frost and snow in November.

November - beaver moon, frost moon

flurry of activity
reinforcement of dams
beaver moon

December - cold moon, oak moon, long night moon

first snowflakes
glisten in the air
under the oak moon

coldness and dark
settle between us
long night moon

January - wolf moon, ice moon, old moon, moon after yule

ice moon rises
howling wolves
lament

February - snow moon, storm moon, hunger moon, crow moon, lenten moon

storm moon hangs
in snow covered branches
ice crackles

March - worm moon, chaste moon, death moon, sap moon, crust moon

slushy days
during the worm moon
frozen nights

winter’s thaw
refrozen hearts
the crust moon
