The scarecrow's old hat

momentarily teetering
on an obelisk before dashing on

that old scarecrow’s hat
wheeling across the field
like a drunken sailor
dancing with the spirits
in wild abandonment

then pinned by the wind
against a picket fence
until happily plucked
by a scarecrow of a boy
and placed proudly on his head
